You're so right, it's not ancient history at all. When my kiddo was young, I ran an after school program for kids whose parents were working. I worked from home so I could be there those hours. In the 2 years I ran the program I was called to testify twice about kids experiencing abuse at home. Those were just the two that went to court. Lots others that should have. I'm glad your foster son lucked upon you. :)
