You know, the funny part is that Automattic, the powerhouse behind, is making over 45 million/year. That was back in 2012 — not sure where they’re at today, but it’s not anything to sneeze at.

Interestingly, they use a combined business model. Their VIP hosting for corporate clients starts at 2500/month. Starts at — it goes up from there. Fast and furious.

Plus, they also run the advertising model on their free sites.

Almost every market eventually narrows down to the top 2 competitors. Yes, there’s always a mitt-full of other contenders — but two primaries. Coke and Pepsi. Democrat and Republican.

No one has taken on Mullenweg and made a big enough splash to stand out as the #2 contender. Lots of small fry — wix, weebly, squarespace — but they’ve all dropped the ball in one way or another.

With the sheer number of visits a month here, it wouldn’t be much of a stretch for Ev to step into that spot. Would beat the heck out of native advertising.

The bottom line is that he needs to decide if we, the members, are his customers or his product.
