Wish I could give this a dozen hearts. I don’t even know where to start, but YES. Nodding all the way through.
By-stander effect for sure. And on top of that, a lot of people have a real chip on their shoulder about “let the rich people pay” and “let the government pay, I give them too much already” — which are the 2 things I’ve heard most when canvassing. And they’re not wrong, because when you look at charitable donations as a percentage of income, mid to lower income people do give more by percent than people in upper income classes do.
I don’t know about the USA, but in Canada, we can only write off 15% of charitable donations to a maximum that’s appallingly low. There’s very little tax incentive to donate to charity, at least here. Every year my accountant tells me I’m *silly* to donate so much to charity because I can’t write it off and tells me I should be spending on tax deductible things instead.
Which makes me think that making philanthropy fully tax deductible might actually help, too. Layers and layers, like an onion.
So many problems in the world aren’t because of lack but distribution problems. We have enough food to feed the world, we just can’t get it where it’s needed. And we have enough money to take care of everyone, but it’s unequally distributed. I wish I knew how to make a bigger impact, but I do what I can and try to amp that up a little every year.
Video games and Wired magazine — you are spot on! Makes me think that somehow — and I don’t have the solution — but somehow charitable orgs need to come up with media-worthy ideas to help increase visiblilty. Because even with a great social presence, there’s a lot of preaching to the choir. The people following are people like me. But how to expand the reach — that’s the real question.
