Time and energy — always the crux! I did notice that many of the publication owners also submit to other publications. But, you’re right that it comes down to time and energy.
When I wrote this post, I didn’t know we’d had native advertising on Medium and that some writers were getting paid in the vicinity of $1000 to write “stories” that were really advertorials. I’m still chewing on that one.
Just seems to me that the biggest opportunity for profit is found in the largest user base. Find that hungry group, and see what they would be willing to pay for. But I suspect that’s not how Medium looks at us. I’m beginning to think we are just eyeballs for sale, based on some of the other bits I’ve run across since writing this post.
