They sometimes did. There was no documentation on hers to say if they did or didn’t, but I assume that since they kept her conscious and singing, perhaps they didn’t. Apparently the “doctor” (not a surgeon) thought that a tap or two where the frontal lobe meets the rest of the brain would make her docile so she didn’t give her father grief about wanting a life. *sigh*
