That’s a valid question. Here’s my thoughts. Black people and gay people have historically been repressed, diminished and discriminated against. Casting a black woman to play a white character does not further repress or diminish an already marginalized person. Changing a gay person’s sexual orientation does continue to perpetuate the discrimination. That’s the difference.
