SlutWalks started in 2011 in response to a remark made by a police officer after a series of sexual assaults on the campus of Canada’s York University.

The police officer said:

Women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized.

The entire POINT of slutwalks is that just because — as you put it — clothing elicits a response, that response should not be rape.

Women do not get raped because they are sluts.
Women get raped because men rape them. Period. Full stop.

When a woman gets raped, what are the questions people automatically ask?

— What was she doing there?
— What was she wearing?

As though what a woman wears is an invitation to be raped.

Basically, the cop said women get raped because of what they wear. The entire point of the slutwalk is to say clothing is not an invitation to be raped.
