People read for two reasons. Information or entertainment. In the information corner, the thinking matters. In the entertainment arena, story trumps all. 50 Shades is a good example. Also, Dan Brown. People who entertain don't need to influence the reader's thinking, they just need to captivate from sentence one. Good piece. :)
