Paul, you make a lot of good points. I would never presume to give an estimate. When I'm talking facts, there is no room for my personal conjecture.

And you're absolutely right -- can you even imagine a world in which women feel safe? I hope it happens one day, but I'll be long dead if it ever does.

You'll notice that I never once said it's all men. I know it's not "all" men. But I stand by saying that when men respond with the #notallmen hashtag, it perpetuates rape culture. Let me explain that.

When the police report any other crime, men do not flock to twitter posting #notallmen in response. Not for burglary, murder, hit and run, etc. That response is only used with regard to women being assaulted.

It derails the conversations. If a woman posted about being robbed, people would respond any other way. Omg, I'm so sorry. Are you okay? Did you get hurt? Are you safe now? Know what I mean?

But when men respond with #notallmen to rape and assault threads, they are making the conversation about THEM, not about the victim. Deflecting. And that perpetuates the problem. Hope that made sense.
