One thing I’ve heard a lot of from both men and women is the “it was different back then” explanation/protest/excuse.
Best analogy I can come up with — there was a time when wearing seat belts was optional. Today we all buckle up because we know better, but no one apologizes for not wearing them in the past.
Same concept. If people truly believe it was “different” before #metoo gained visibility, then it would make sense that they don’t think they need to apologize. Because the rules were different.
What they don’t realize is that sexual harassment and sexual abuse were never okay. The rules were never different. We just didn’t have a platform like the internet to voice them collectively.
