But restraint is part of a police officer’s job — and it’s something they’re absolutely capable of. It was just a few weeks ago, after all, that heavily armed white men stormed into the Michigan Capitol building to express their anger over the coronavirus stay-at-home order. None of those armed and angry protestors were beaten, tear gassed, or shot with rubber bullets. Nor was there any retaliative violence in Sacramento when white people screamed and rushed police officers as part of their protest against the lockdown.
Of course not. They were not protesting the death of a black man at the hands of a white cop. There is a pecking order in society. White people at the top. Black people at the bottom. Men dominate, women are supposed to know their place. Preferably, in the kitchen. Making a sandwich.
That is why 155 years after slavery was abolished, black people are still not treated equal and 100 years after getting the vote, women are still not equal under the law. White men like the status quo, for the most part. Yes, there are those who do not follow those outdated models. For the most part, they are not the people in power. That needs to change before anything else will.
