My Dad was a WWII veteran. He had flashbacks and nightmares until the day he passed. Mostly, he didn’t talk about it. The odd time, he’d whisper of watching friends die and running into gunfire. Dismantling a Jewish prisoner camp at the end of the war and how what he saw haunted him. And he would cry, still hurting.
As long as there are power hungry people in the world, we will always need a military. We need to do better at honoring not just the lives put on the line foe the freedoms we take for granted, but the mental health of those who come back and are our walking wounded.
Thank you for this post, Mike.
