Mary's mother was horribly abused from what I read. I read suggestions that she may have gotten pregnant by her father, ie Mary may have been the product of incestual rape which would explain her reaction at Mary's birth. The one shining light is that Mary seems to have ended the pattern and raised her daughter in a loving home with no abuse.
