People mentioned above (including me) quit their oppressive job and say, “I quit my oppressive 9-to-5 to do something I’m more passionate about!” It feels fantastic. You travel for a bit, explore a few things, maybe start a blog or do something that looks dope on Instagram.
I’ve been self employed since 1996. Sometimes it has nothing to do with the job being oppressive and has everything to do with 9–5 hours being oppressive.
I was a single Mom, sick to death of telling my child no, Mommy can’t come to your play… no, Mommy can’t go on the field trip — I have to work.
Now I work on my schedule. If it’s +26 and I want to go to the beach for the afternoon, I can. If it’s raining Sunday and I want to catch up on work, I can.
For me, it was never about hating business culture, but about the freedom to work a flexible schedule.
You know — so I can comment on Medium posts I like at any random time of the day. Apparently. lol.
