Insulting, yes. Gratuitously? Not a chance. Less tongue in cheek than most people would realize. My opinion, of course. There’s an old saying that we can’t judge people by how they act when the sun is shining, but how they act when the crap hits the fan. The publishing industry has been a mess for a long time and the ease of self-publishing is shining a light on lots of ugly bits they’d rather most people didn’t see. But, you already know that. :)
