Indeed. In 1870, black men got the right to vote. It would be another 50 years before women did.

And the entire time, poll taxes and literacy tests ensured that there weren't many black or female votes. The bigger the wheel, the slower it moves. Racism and sexism are big wheels.

Let's cross our fingers the electoral college plays nice.
