In a snippet with Oprah, she said not a single day goes by that she doesn’t get multiple phone calls from people asking for money. And it’s not that she can’t afford to give — she can, and does. But the constant never-ending requests get tiresome.
Lottery winners experience that too. Some of them end up more miserable (often broke again, too) because of unrelenting family and friends who “need” their help.
P.S. I really liked this piece. Hedonic adaptation is something more people should know about. Another thing I wish was taught in school. Can you imagine the world if children grew up knowing this? What different decisions so many of us might have made! ❤
