I want me to get 100,000 likes, too!
Honestly, I don’t think content creators think if another writer gets 100K likes that they lose. I really don’t think that’s what’s happening.
I think what happens is that they see writing that gets stellar response and they feel their work is not of lesser quality, but they’re not getting the same traction. That stings a little, and of course it does. Human nature.
Another factor is that sometimes when a writer has a sufficiently large following, social proof kicks in and affects response. A writer with 50K followers will get those first 100 likes faster than a writer with 500 followers. Once the likes start growing, they take on a life of their own.
I don’t think it’s all just jealousy that someone else got more likes. I think it comes down to frustration with the growth process. That’s pretty human.
But you’re right — we need to be more supportive of each other as a whole. I try to look for a couple of new writers every day. It’s a small thing I can do for the people we are just starting out. :)
