I think there’s some truth in that, for sure. At the same time, I think sometimes the other parts creep in a little. Some of the images in Seuss’s books are a perfect example. But that said, I’ve never believed in hiding everything offensive from kids. I’d rather use them to start conversations. Like, how might a little Asian child feel to see those pictures? How might a little Black boy feel to see pictures of Black people in grass skirts with gold rings in their nose. When we hide all the world’s ugly from kids, we aren’t helping prepare them for the world they have to live in. Sometimes the best teaching is to hold truth in compassionate hands.
