I joined too. I would have joined if they offered nothing different. Here’s why…

$5/month is darn cheap blog hosting. I could get a baby gator hosting acct for $6.95 a month, install Wordpress, manage the whole muck and plugins and security. (and I do, I have several sites)

But with my WP sites, I can’t write a post, submit it to a publication, and get an audience overnight.

That alone is worth $5/month to me. So I’d pay the $5 even if nothing changed. If it means we help Medium keep offering what they’re offering, I’m in.
