I have not seen the version with Cliff Robertson but knowing he won an Academy Award for the performance says a lot. The change they wanted wouldn’t have just changed the ending, it would have changed the entire trajectory of the story but it’s hard to describe the travesty they wanted without spoiling the book for people who haven’t read it. I’m going to look and see if the Cliff Robertson movie is floating around somewhere. :)
