I doubt it has anything to do with that. More likely, it's because images (and especially uncompressed images) are the number one cause of website load issues in general. I suspect it's an attempt to resolve the load issues we've had, not a punishment for photographers. After all, we can still link to the original image in the credits. And if it improves loading, that's a benefit for everyone. :)
