When Stacy Abrams was 17, she graduated valedictorian of her high school. She was excited, because all valedictorians in Georgia got to visit the Governor’s mansion and meet the Governor of Georgia.

That morning, she got dressed in her best Sunday clothes and took the bus with her Mom and Dad, because they were too poor to afford a car.

When they got there, the guard looked at her parents, looked at her, and said “This is a private event. You don’t belong here.

Almost every black person, person of color, every minority — can understand how she felt in that moment.

She did eventually get in. After much arguing, her father yelling and refusing to leave until they checked the register. They finally did.

Years later, she has no memory of meeting the Governor. She doesn’t remember meeting the other 180 valedictorians from across the state of Georgia. She just remembers that man. Telling her she doesn’t belong.

Racism has been America’s history for far too long.

This is a private event. You don’t belong here.

Thank you, Stacey Abrams

With Joe Biden projected to become the next president, much of the credit goes to someone who wasn’t on the ballot. Stacey Abrams.

For not giving up. For not backing down. After serving 11 years in the Georgia House of Representatives, 7 as Democratic Leader, she lost her bid for Governor of Georgia. She did not give up.

Never underestimate the power of a woman with a mission.

Her mission was to change Georgia. Make it a place where a young black girl would never again be told she doesn’t “belong” in the Governor’s mansion.

She wrote a book about voter suppression. And launched a program called Fair Fight to ensure every American has a voice in the election system. Together, they signed up has over 800,000 new voters.

Together, they gave the state of Georgia it’s first Democratic win in 28 years.

The happiest 12 seconds of 2020…

Today, instead of seeing people protesting in the streets, they’re celebrating.

I don’t know whether Trump will concede. I doubt it. I don’t know what’s going to happen when the electoral college votes. I hope they vote with the popular vote. They don’t have to. It’s not law. But I hope they do.

But for now? There’s dancing in the streets. And it does my heart good.

3 Questions to ask yourself…

It’s easy to get frustrated. Beaten down. Especially during the &$% pandemic that just won’t end. People are broke. Exhausted. Bone tired. If you can identify with that, I recommend Stacey’s TED talk.

She brings no platitudes…

She’s not going to tell you to wake up at freaking 5 am or any of the lame platitudes circulated by the self help crowd. Just solid advice. She’s an amazing woman. I think you’ll like it. Enjoy!
