Here's what I know (so far) from behind the scenes. ... not everyone has checked into the editor's slack group yet b/c the editors are from 17 different time zones.
When that piece was submitted, many editors posted complaints to the slack group requesting that it be rejected. I do not know who published it.
After the article and writer were removed from Illumination, someone reported the article to Medium. I don't know who that was.
There is some heavy discussion happening in the editor's forum with regard to recognizing and rejecting hate speech, which is a conversation that has been long needed, imho.
As to taking him to task for public support of homophobia, all I can speak for is myself. I have been vocal explaining that the phrase sexual preference does not mean being gay is a choice and if anyone thinks so, they are wrong.
I have also posted that no one wants to think they are a racist or bigot, if we stay silent when someone expresses racist or bigoted opinions, we are taking the side of the racist or bigot.
On a personal note, I have only been an editor for just over a month. I have been a member and supporter of the LGBTQ community for years. If I had to choose between the two, the choice is not difficult.
