When Borys Romanchenko was 19, Nazi guards lined up the prisoners at Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. They were going to be eliminated. The poisoned food was ready.

The allies were coming. They all had to be terminated.

He’d been in the camps since he was 15. The war completely surprised them and there wasn’t enough time to flee.

When they first captured him, they sent him to a labor camp. Healthy boy, he could work. But he escaped. At all of 15, he was equal parts brave and terrified. He was sneaking onto a train when they re-captured him.

That’s when they sent him to Buchenwald.

He was beaten and starved. Forced to work in a mine. Forced to work in a munitions factory. Forced to watch as prisoners were slaughtered.
