One minute I was putting in laundry. The next I was flying up the stairs two at a time. That’s what you do when you hear a crash.

Got upstairs just in time to see Dad hurrying down the hall as fast as his legs could go.

Get me out of here, he said.

So I helped him out the patio door. Settled him in his chair. Asked if he wanted coffee. Sure, he said. That would be nice.

I brought out two cups. Sat my butt in the other chair.

Then I asked him what he saw.

He stared at me silently. Then he slowly turned his head away and looked up at the sky. Mused about what a lovely day it was. I laughed. Then I asked him again. What did you see, dad?

He said he didn’t see anything.

He was lying.
