Both, of course, and more. I can't help but think of Maslow's hierarchy of needs. You can't teach self improvement or self actualization to someone who doesn't have enough money to buy food and pay their bills. That's half of America now.
So many people just ignore it all. Ignore the oceans and forests and global worming and vote for whoever says they can put people back to work. And that's how the rich people want it. Keep the peasants hungry and they'll pay no attention to what the rich are doing.
Stupidity and evil, yet. But also self preservation and people who are too busy trying to exist to have any interest in learning what's really happening around them.
